This unassuming hardcover in black buckram with a dark lavender title plate is the door into a world of twisted pleasures. Filmmaker Tim Burton (
Edward Scissorhands,
Beetlejuice,
The Nightmare Before Christmas) tells 23 winsomely macabre stories about boys and girls who don't fit in. Their bodies are misshapen, their habits are odd, and their parents are appalled by them. But they do try hard to be human, like poor unwanted Mummy Boy, who's "a bundle of gauze": he goes for a walk in the park with his mummy dog. Some kids are having "a birthday party for a Mexican girl." They think Mummy Boy is a piñata: "They took a baseball bat and whacked open his head. Mummy Boy fell to the ground; he finally was dead. Inside of his head were no candy or prizes, just a few stray beetles of various sizes." For all its simple humor,
The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories is a peculiarly disturbing book about the violence that children suffer. It is illustrated in pen and ink, watercolor, and crayon. The themes and imagery are at a young-adult to adult level.
From breathtaking stop-action animation to bittersweet modern fairy tales, filmmaker Tim Burton has become known for his unique visual brilliance -- witty and macabre at once. Now he gives birth to a cast of gruesomely sympathetic children -- misunderstood outcasts who struggle to find love and belonging in their cruel, cruel worlds. His lovingly lurid illustrations evoke both the sweetness and the tragedy of these dark yet simple beings -- hopeful, hapless heroes who appeal to the ugly outsider in all of us, and let us laugh at a world we have long left behind (mostly anyway).

This book was brand new. The pages were still stiff from not being opened.
Almost unrecognizable scratches on the back paper label from being pulled on/off the shelf. Nothing different that I would have found at the book store. Near mint condition. |

| I got this as a gift for my wife & she loved it, I wasn't quite sure what to expect 'cause I am not really all that much into poetry but this one was too funny to not read, I myself have gone through it @ least 12 times & I know she reads it @ least twice a week, so good buy if you are looking for some rather morbid laughs. |
| It's Tim Burton. What'd you expect? | 2010-06-01 | 4 / 5 |

I considered myself a big fan of Tim Burton. From Pee-Wee to Charlie, and pretty much everything in between, I'm a fan of his films (Edward Scissorhands is, and always will be, my favorite film). His artistry and strange sense of the spook adds a personal touch of quality that I'm finely in tune with.
Nevertheless, I never really had the opportunity to delve into his written works, so I decided to try this speciously harmless collection of poetry. About a handful of poems in, I questioned whether it was really aimed at kids at all!
Writers and filmmakers argue how hard it is to portray emotion and thought onto film, and trying to show Burton's definitely proves a point. Though his films aptly convey the "huggable monsters," his written work really get into his mind and leave you with disturbing mental images that his films usually don't.
I enjoyed the works for the most part; I guess I really wasn't ready to expect what this collection entails. It's a perfect view into Burton's "light macabre" style, and the writing is simple, yet should be geared towards the teen-and-up crowd. |

I love this book, but I will say this book is not for everyone. If you like Dr. Seuss and you love things that other people would find really dark and weird then this book is for you! It is a lot of fun to read, but be forewarned that it is a little out there and takes a special kind of person to fully appreciate this book.

| a fun little book, but NOT for children | 2010-03-05 | 4 / 5 |

| This is a fun little book, full of simple illustrations and dark little stories. Please be aware that it is NOT a book for children, as the themes may be way too scary. If you are a fan though of Tim Burton's twisted humor, you would probably enjoy it. |
