[Normally I would not base a review on price, but since this product is being sold at an inflated price on the secondary market ( Featured Merchants), it becomes important to note that while it is an inexpensive but decent machine, it is certainly not an excellent but expensive one.]
As inferred, this is no longer a current model, but when it was (until some time last year), it was sold at Wal-Mart--adjacent to the pharmacy department--for fifteen dollars. I bought the last two on the shelf at my local store in June 2009. One unit quit working after 3 days, the other is thankfully still working. If Wal-Mart starts selling these again for the same price, and even knowing that the electronics have a limited lifespan, I would probably buy a couple extra for future use. But I certainly would *not* pay upwards of fifty bucks to some of the third party vendors here on , because at that price you can get a nicer sound machine.
To that point, we bought this Conair SU1W to replace a much more expensive (though admittedly more full-featured) Sharper Image unit which was starting to have some problems, notably the connection for the power cord jack was temperamental. And since it sucked the life out of batteries in what seemed like a day or two, using AC power was imperative. (P.S. This Conair unit can also run on either battery or AC power but as you can imagine, I only use the latter.)
I was hesitant about the Conair because of the middling reviews here (3-1/2 star average with plenty of 1's) and would not have taken the chance of buying it online only to hassle with shipping it back. I only decided to purchase it because it was, at that time, available locally. Today, even after batting only fifty percent myself with the two I bought (Wal-Mart took back the bum unit), I would still recommend it _at that price_. Ten different sounds (plenty of variety, even if some sound similar!), volume control, two power options, and small enough to easily pack. Really excellent value for fifteen dollars.
Plenty of adults use these to help sleep problems, but we used it as a white noise machine for the babies. Great way to create the fourth trimester as per Dr. Karp:

HINT: Turn off the AUTO Timer or else the machine will turn itself off after an hour. If you only use the machine to fall asleep, no big deal. But if you wish to use it to STAY asleep, remember to switch off the timer. Conair's model SU12, which *only* works on a finite timer, gets horrible reviews across the board:

| I've been using it in my son's room now for about a year and a half. We use the white noise setting, but I think the other sound settings are soothing as well. The volume level is great, too. I've used cheaper sound machines that you could barely hear at the highest level, but that's certainly not the case with this product. I think it's worth the money. |
