In this illustrated and easy-to-use guide, noted pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene, a leading voice of the green baby movement, advises parents how to make healthy green choices for pregnancy, childbirth, and baby care—from feeding your baby the best food available to using medicines wisely. Consumer advocate Jeanette Pavini includes information for making smart choices and applying green principles to a whole new universe of products from zero-VOC paints for the nursery, to pure and gentle lotions for baby’s delicate skin, to the eco-friendly diapers now in the marketplace, as well as specific recommendations for hundreds of other products.

| My husband and I already live a fairly "green" lifestyle, but I was hoping this would be the book to convince me to take it to the next level. It didn't. I was looking for a book that would make a compelling argument for buying organic foods, avoiding certain chemicals, altering our daily behaviors, and so on. While this book did introduce me to several topics I hadn't necessarily considered before (health effects of different flooring choices, flame retardants on clothing, toxins in baby hygiene products, etc), I found most of the evidence on these topics to be weak.
There were exceptions. Before reading this book, I hadn't paid much attention to the BPA/phthalate debate. After reading this book (and doing some research of my own), I replaced all of our plastic drinking cups with glass, started checking recycling codes at the grocery store, and made sure all plastic objects likely to come in contact with my child's mouth are BPA free. I also found the section on homemade household cleaners to be helpful. Additionally, I had not considered the difference between chemical and physical barrier based sunscreens before reading this book. Now, I feel more informed on the topic and have made the decision to use a physical barrier based sunscreen (at least for our little one).
However, this book failed to convince me to spend the extra money on organic food - even the "Top 5" organic foods listed in the book. I also didn't buy organic clothing or bedsheets or an organic crib mattress. We have some wooden toys for our daughter, but also a ton of plastic stuff. Other than the sunscreen, I didn't find much of the other information on baby hygiene products to be helpful or compelling. We use a regular free and clear detergent and Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo. In the end, it comes down to money for us; and without clear evidence that the chemicals in soaps, clothes, and toys are actually harmful; we are not going to pay extra for designer baby products, some of which can only be purchased online. As others have mentioned, this book tends to focus heavily on the spending side of "green".
Another issue I had with the book was that a good half of it was pretty much useless to me and my situation because a) my husband and I had already decided to breastfeed/have a natural birth/try home remedies before antibiotics/cloth diaper/replace our light bulbs/etc/etc or b) we don't own our home so we can't change the appliances/toilets/insulation/flooring/paint/etc/etc. This will not be the same for everyone. Someone completely new to the "green" concept or someone who actually owns their home will probably find this to be a more useful book overall.
So, I give the book 3 stars because I did get something out of it. However, I would encourage any reader to use this book as a launching point for your own research on these topics. Also, if you aren't a complete green newbie and/or you rent, be prepared for many pages of reading that isn't particularly helpful. |
| Very informative | 2009-10-29 | 5 / 5 |
| | This book is great. I was already fairly knowledgeable about "green living" but I have really learned a lot from this book. There are things that I want to be more aware of now that I am pregnant. It is expensive to go 100% green, but after reading this book I can focus on the things I feel are most important. For instance, I am willing to invest extra money into a good baby mattress after knowing about all the many different harmful toxins in conventional baby mattresses, and now I know what to look for when looking for a safe baby mattress. It also gives references in each chapter to different websites that has a wide range of baby products, food, diapers, paint, furniture, etc. |
| Great Book | 2009-09-08 | 5 / 5 |
| The layout is wonderful, the information is useful and while I no longer have a "baby" per se, I have given this book to several friends who are either becoming grandparents for the first time, or their friends. Protecting our children's health is paramount these days, and this book does a great job of outlining some of the most important aspects to raising children TODAY.
I'm a long time fan of Dr. Greene, and you just don't see that compassion and passion for children's health and well-being than you do in Dr. Greene's website (www.drgreene.com) or his many books.
Thanks for helping me raise my own child Greene. :)
