In this illustrated and easy-to-use guide, noted pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene, a leading voice of the green baby movement, advises parents how to make healthy green choices for pregnancy, childbirth, and baby care—from feeding your baby the best food available to using medicines wisely. Consumer advocate Jeanette Pavini includes information for making smart choices and applying green principles to a whole new universe of products from zero-VOC paints for the nursery, to pure and gentle lotions for baby’s delicate skin, to the eco-friendly diapers now in the marketplace, as well as specific recommendations for hundreds of other products.

Great Book!!!2010-08-165 / 5
I have purchased several books with a theme of organic/eco-friendly ways to prepare for and raise a baby, and this is by far my favorite. The author covered almost all of the areas in which I had questions and concerns, and gives some solid resources to go to for further investigation and purchasing organic and eco-friendly products.
good... but.....2010-06-234 / 5
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed reading this book. Book is great! However, I probably expected something else from it. There are a lot of information how to make your life green and if you are anything like me you already learned great part of it from everywhere around (bulbs, water, electricity, organic products...) What I probably wanted to see in this book is how to educate your child about green lifestyle, how to tell him in a playful way that it is very important to live in a harmony with the world. That is what I was missing in this book. Other than that... everything is great! I absolutely loved all these links he provided. I spent a great deal of time browsing internet after each chapter. Definitely worth buying and reading especially if you are 8 months pregnant and all you do is thinking of your coming baby)
Good Resource2010-03-274 / 5
This book is a great resource. It details some do's and don'ts of living a green/chemical-free lifestyle. One of my favorite features of the book are the lists of products that the author recommends. Obviously these products aren't the only (or even the best) options all of the time, but for someone just starting out in this lifestyle, the tips are a pointer in the right direction. Also, I liked the fact that the author noted that EACH change makes a difference for the world, and it is not always necessary change EVERYTHING if one is not ready.

All of this being said about this book... I also bought The Complete Organic Guide to Pregnancy, and I liked that book a little bit better. Overall I am glad that I bought both because the books complement each other, but if I had to choose one or the other, I would choose The Complete Organic Guide to Pregnancy.

Eh, It's Okay2010-01-113 / 5
My husband and I already live a fairly "green" lifestyle, but I was hoping this would be the book to convince me to take it to the next level. It didn't. I was looking for a book that would make a compelling argument for buying organic foods, avoiding certain chemicals, altering our daily behaviors, and so on. While this book did introduce me to several topics I hadn't necessarily considered before (health effects of different flooring choices, flame retardants on clothing, toxins in baby hygiene products, etc), I found most of the evidence on these topics to be weak.

There were exceptions. Before reading this book, I hadn't paid much attention to the BPA/phthalate debate. After reading this book (and doing some research of my own), I replaced all of our plastic drinking cups with glass, started checking recycling codes at the grocery store, and made sure all plastic objects likely to come in contact with my child's mouth are BPA free. I also found the section on homemade household cleaners to be helpful. Additionally, I had not considered the difference between chemical and physical barrier based sunscreens before reading this book. Now, I feel more informed on the topic and have made the decision to use a physical barrier based sunscreen (at least for our little one).

However, this book failed to convince me to spend the extra money on organic food - even the "Top 5" organic foods listed in the book. I also didn't buy organic clothing or bedsheets or an organic crib mattress. We have some wooden toys for our daughter, but also a ton of plastic stuff. Other than the sunscreen, I didn't find much of the other information on baby hygiene products to be helpful or compelling. We use a regular free and clear detergent and Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo. In the end, it comes down to money for us; and without clear evidence that the chemicals in soaps, clothes, and toys are actually harmful; we are not going to pay extra for designer baby products, some of which can only be purchased online. As others have mentioned, this book tends to focus heavily on the spending side of "green".

Another issue I had with the book was that a good half of it was pretty much useless to me and my situation because a) my husband and I had already decided to breastfeed/have a natural birth/try home remedies before antibiotics/cloth diaper/replace our light bulbs/etc/etc or b) we don't own our home so we can't change the appliances/toilets/insulation/flooring/paint/etc/etc. This will not be the same for everyone. Someone completely new to the "green" concept or someone who actually owns their home will probably find this to be a more useful book overall.

So, I give the book 3 stars because I did get something out of it. However, I would encourage any reader to use this book as a launching point for your own research on these topics. Also, if you aren't a complete green newbie and/or you rent, be prepared for many pages of reading that isn't particularly helpful.
